WANT TO BECOME A VOLUNTEER?

(Must be 16 years old or older to volunteer)

1. Fill out an application below or stop in to the shelter and fill one out.

(please indicate if you are volunteering for school or court ordered community service, as this space is limited)

2. Once we receive your application, we will schedule you for an orientation (approx. 1 hour long) that teaches you the basics of animal care, tour of our shelter, and learn our expectations, opportunities, and programs.

3. For your first day we will pair you with a seasoned volunteer to introduce you to our animals and answer any remaining questions.

4. After this point you are free to come and volunteer during any of our open hours. If you are available regularly we do appreciate setting routine days for active volunteers to help regulate our shelter schedule.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

We always need volunteers to help with daily animal care and events but we also have many community outreach programs open to our volunteers!

Daily Animal Care

From snuggling to cleaning, help is always needed in our kennels! Daily needs include, but certainly are not limited too:

  • Socializing/Individual Time with the Cats and Dogs

  • Enrichment Activities

  • Cleaning Kennels and Living Areas

  • Potty Breaks (Dogs) and Scooping Litter (Cats)

  • Grooming

  • Taking Photos

  • Exploring our wooded Trails (Dogs)

Play Groups

Dogs have a natural desire to play. We try to allow the dog to express this as much as possible. Not only is it fun for them, but it is beneficial too! Play groups allow dogs to:

  • Burn Off Stress and Energy

  • Appear More Calm and Relaxed in their Kennels

  • Learn Critical Dog-to-Dog Social Skills

  • Become Happier, Healthier, Well-Adjusted Dogs

It's a lot of fun for volunteers, and also serves as a tool to help us better match dogs with their forever families!

Adoption Events

Muskegon Humane Society's regularly scheduled adoption events are:

  • PetSmart (Sherman Blvd., Muskegon) - 1st Saturday of the Month

  • Chow Hound (Beacon Blvd., Grand Haven) - 2nd Saturday of the Month

  • PetSmart (Sherman Blvd., Muskegon) - 3rd Saturday of the Month

  • Pet Supplies Plus (12579 Felch St, Holland,) - 4th Saturday of the Month

During adoption events volunteers allow people to meet with animals and provide them with information about the shelter. We are actively looking to expand our event team!

Dog Training

Explore the training program with our training team and learn how you can help the dogs in our care be successful in their new homes! Teach them skills such as:

  • Basic Manners

  • Increasing Confidence

  • Conditioning to a Home-Like Environment

Fundraising Committee

The fundraising committee is responsible for raising money for our shelter. We are 100% donation funded so this committee is vital to our survival. We are always looking for fun, creative people who can help us improve our current fundraisers or introduce new ones.

Contact us Alexis for meeting times and dates.
